Useful Utilities

I was thinking I should start small list with the utilities I use everyday. They are installed on my laptop, but what if I get a new one, or when I have to do a ‘re-install’.

Always running:

  • Trillian. Trillian™ is a fully featured, stand-alone, skinnable chat client that supports AIM, ICQ, MSN, Yahoo Messenger, and IRC.
  • Taskbar Shuffle. No hotkey, no extra steps, drag and drop the programs on your Windows taskbar by simply… well, dragging and dropping them!
  • Statbar. StatBar is a freeware system status bar which provides a handy, orderly overview of your system’s condition.
  • Feedreader. Feedreader is a free lightweight aggregator that supports RSS and ATOM formats.
  • Skype. Talk with people over the internet. 
  • IMap Notify. IMAP Notify is a free product available from the VanDyke FTP site:
  • Ultramon. UltraMon is a utility for multi-monitor systems, designed to increase productivity and unlock the full potential of multiple monitors.
  • TaskSwitchXP Pro. TaskSwitchXP is an advanced task management utility that picks up where the standard Windows Alt+Tab switcher leaves off.
  • ANT. ANT is ANother Toolbar. It is a toolbar with tabs buttons to use for launching applications or opening folders or files.
  • KeepAlive. KeepAlive is a small tool to prevent the screensaver from starting.
  • WorkPace. WorkPace: RSI Injury Prevention Software
  • Yahoo Widget Engine. Yahoo Widget Engine. Keep the stuff that you love right at your fingertips.

Oracle Related

  • PL/SQL Developer. PL/SQL Developer is an Integrated Development Environment that is specifically targeted at the development of stored program units for Oracle Databases.
  • Quest CodeGenerating Utility. Use often

  • Windows Live Writer. A tool to create blog postings easily.
  • FileZilla. FileZilla is a fast and reliable FTP client and server with lots of useful features and an intuitive interface.
  • Quintessential Player. Quintessential Player (a.k.a. QCD) is a feature rich media player for Microsoft Windows. It supports all popular audio formats including MP3, WMA, Ogg Vorbis, and CDs.

Maybe there’s even more, but this is what I can think of at this time.

  1. Thanks for the shout out for Quest CodeGen and Quest Code Tester. We’re working on new freeware versions of both and also working on the next commercial version of Code Tester that will have more support for XML based testing.

    BTW, I would have to put in my vote for SnagIt for screen captures as tools that I always have running. And of course on the the Oracle tools side, my little green friend 🙂
